Despite the difficult political situation, the government, led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', has made significant achievements in the very short span of time. The government has completed 100 days 'honeymoon period' on Tuesday after the Prime Minister assumed his office on December 26, 2022. The government was formed at a challenging juncture when the country was reeling from economic difficulties and political uncertainty following a complex verdict of the people in the recent elections. But the current government and its leadership has been able to make an appreciable headway and it has rekindled hope on both political and economic fronts. Though the Prime Minister required taking the vote of confidence twice and reshuffling the Council of Ministers due to special political circumstances, the government has made some strides in its priority areas of social justice and good governance. There is the much desired commitment to lead the nation on the path of prosperity.
The government has been working to revive the national economy, accelerate development works, make service delivery accessible and promote social justice. To this end, the government has made attempts to overcome recession and intensify economic activities, improving the foreign exchange reserves, monetary liquidity and credit status. It has worked to raise the morale of the private sector, making public service delivery more effective and citizen-friendly, controlling corruption and irregularities and maintaining good governance at all levels and structures of the state.
Besides, an integrated action plan has been prepared to implement the government policies and its common minimum programme in an effective, result-oriented and timely manner. The integrated action plan includes government reforms, building economic infrastructure, social development and other related topics. In coordination with Nepal Rastra Bank, the government has made efforts to address the complaints of the private sector regarding banking and financial policies through revision of current capital loan guidance and semi-annual review of monetary policy. Concluding the remaining tasks of the peace process and transitional justice without further delay is another focus area of the government. To this end, the government has tabled the Bill on Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Third Amendment), 2079 in the parliament and listed 8,471 martyrs of the ‘People’s War’ and People’s Movement in the Nepal Gazette.
The government has made arrangements for hassle-free service delivery while issuing passports, national identity cards, driver's licenses, and No Objection Letters. Works are in progress to form a high-level administration restructuring commission to make the public administration, including the civil administration, security agencies less expensive, agile, accountable and capable, and also to advance the relation between the three levels of government. Easing labour permit process for migrant workers, starting telemedicine service for them, formation of Immediate Response Task Force (IRTF) to deal with their complaints and providing financial assistance to the families of migrant workers who died during foreign employment and scholarships to their children are other works accomplished by the government. The government is also focusing on improving foreign relations, accelerating the system of exporting electricity to neighbouring countries and timely availing of school textbooks.
Though the current government has been successful in overcoming political uncertainty and initiating steps for economic revival, several challenges need to be tackled. High inflation, sluggish revenue collection, slumping confidence of the private sector caused by high interest rate and shortage of liquidity in the financial market continue to vex the economy. So, the government has to make urgent precautions to address economic problems by taking the entire private sector and civil society into confidence.
