Kathmandu, June 1: Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy of the United States Sarah B. Rogers paid a call on Minister for Information and Communications, Dr Bikram Timilsina, on Monday.
During the meeting held at the Ministry, Singha Durbar, they discussed various matters including bilateral relations, information technology, telecommunications, digital security and investment expansion.
Similarly, discussions were held on further enhancing Nepal-US cooperation in information technology, digital infrastructure, cyber security and investment expansion, according to the Ministry.
Mentioning that Nepal-US relations were friendly, Under Secretary of State Rogers underlined that the US was willing to expand collaboration in information technology and the telecommunication sector.
She opined that American companies are interested to expand investment in Nepal, expecting investment-friendly environment, policy-level stability and necessary facilitation for this purpose.
She also shared about the possibility of cooperation to control online scams and publicity of indecent and sensitive contents, adding the US was ready to support in investment expansion and digital infrastructure development sectors.
Similarly, Minister Dr Timilsina mentioned that the country is heading on the path of economic and administrative transformation through information technology, stating Nepal welcomes all types of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in this sector.
Saying that the issue of bringing in foreign direct investment in the country is on top priority, the Minister briefed about existing policies and legal arrangements for the investment in the telecom sector.
The Communications Minister clarified that the government is not in favour of controlling social media platforms and added that regulatory arrangements were necessary to build an accountable digital environment. (RSS)
