Officials at Sikta Irrigation Project, a national pride project, informed that they have started allowing water to flow along the western canal and some part of eastern canal. “The water flowing along the canals hase supported irrigation in 17,000 hecatres of land in Banke. Dalit settlement in Juwapani, Budiganda Municipality-9, Bajura district, is at high risk of landslide. The locals are now worried that the monsoon-induced disaster may displace them again after a decade. Landslides striking from the top and in front of the houses of the locals have put the settlement at risk. Bharat Nepali, a Dalit leader of the area, said the landslide started hitting in front of the settlement due to the incessant rainfall since the Wednesday night. The locals are now anxious about how to save their lives in the event of a disaster, he added.
The Rato Machhidrantath Consumer Committee is reconstructing the Rato Machhindranath Temple with the aim of completing it by the time of coming Rato Machhindratha Jatra. Currently 70 per cent reconstruction work of the temple, in Bungamati, Lalitpur, has completed after the committee took up the responsibility of constructing it. The work is progressing in the right direction after the Department of Archaeology (DoA) handed over the project to the committee in June, 2020. The major works on the ground floor has completed and now work on upper part of the Shikhar-styled temple is underway.
Nepalgunj Medical College (NMC) has agreed to offer up to 25 per cent discount in the treatment of incumbent and retired police officers referred from Kohalpur-based Mid-Western Regional Police Hospital. According to the medical college, they will also be providing the discount to the family members of the officers as well. “Former or current police officers and their family members referred to us from the police hospital in Kohalpur will be offered up to 25 per cent discount on their treatment costs,” said Dr. Roman Kidwai, assistant director at Nepalgunj Medical College.
With a water volume that can generate a total of 80,000 megawatts of electricity but with the technical viability of producing about 42,000 MW, hydropower energy can become a strong vehicle for advancing our country's economy. Though the nation has not yet achieved the optimum level of power generation capacity, it has gradually been installing new hydropower projects in various parts of the nation where rivers run round the year. A Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) report suggests that the country currently has an installed capacity of 2,200 MW of power generation. The peak demand for domestic consumption of electricity stands at 1,660 MW. It suggests that we have a surplus of electricity.

FIFA said Friday it is ready to launch semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) that uses multiple cameras to track player movements plus a sensor in the ball — and will quickly show 3D images on stadium screens at the tournament to help fans understand the referee's call. It's the third World Cup in a row that sees FIFA introduce new technology to help referees.

Solar lights have been installed in various wards of Chaurjahari Municipality in Rukum West. Chaurjahari is one of the 10 new cities announced by the government. The places are illuminated after the installation of 325 lights in eight different wards of the municipality. The solar lights were installed in roads, public places and buspark area of the new city by Chaurjahari New City Project (CNCP). Chairman of the CNCP, Dhir Fadera, said that setting up of solar lights in eight wards, which were approved in the fiscal year 2021/22, has been completed.
The Mid-West University has begun studying Bhojpatra or the Himalayan birch which is used as paper to write important documents in ancient period. Teachers and students of the University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication have started researching the birch tree found in the forests of Karnali to analyse its uses and benefits. Lecturer Yuvaraj Sharma and students of the department along with Jumla district President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Netra Bahadur Shahi and journalist Binod Bhattarai are looking into the birch for a research paper.
Experts have expressed concerned over whether the tax discounts given to the businesses and industries have reached the consumers. If consumers do not benefit from such discounts, they should be scrapped, they said at a dialogue organised by Nepal Association of Financial Journalists (NAFJI) on Friday. “The government should analyse if the tax discount resulted in more employment, environment protection, productivity and economic growth,” said Sujata Pariyar, a member of the Industry, Commerce, Labor and Consumer Welfare Committee of the House of Representatives.
Lumbini Province is prone to floods and landslides every year. This year, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has already forecast above-normal rainfall in the province. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has also informed that there is a risk of floods in the Terai districts and landslides in the hilly districts. There are 12 districts in Lumbini Province. Of them, six districts of the Terai – West Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Dang, Banke, and Bardiya – are at high risk of floods. Similarly, hilly districts – Gulmi, Arghakhanchi, Pyuthan, Rolpa, and Palpa – are at high risk of landslides. East Rukum, a mountainous district in the province, is not at risk of floods or landslides.
Nepali Army troops have set out to explore the foot trails used by the Gorkhali forces under King Prithvi Narayan Shah during his national unification campaign. King Prithvi Narayan Shah built present Nepal by unifying small principalities popularly called Baise (22) and Chaubise (24) states from 1743. Nepali Army forces have started exploring the foot trails from the then Doti kingdom and have established a fort at Khalanga, the district headquarters of Dadeldhura. The army has said that it plans to explore the trails from the Amargadhi Fort of Dadeldhura in the east to Khaptad in the west.
Four months after its inauguration by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, only 13 cargo containers have entered the Chobhar Dry Port in Kritipur. Four cargos had entered on the day of inauguration on April 5. Only nine cargo containers have entered it thereafter. Dhan Bahadur Baruwal, custom chief of the Chobhar Dry Port, said that movement of cargo containers have not increased. Moreover, arrival of cargo containers has, of late, decreased in other dry ports of the border area, he added.
Exchange rate of the US dollar against the Nepali currency has been steadily rising, and on Friday the exchange rate reached the highest- Rs. 126.66 for one dollar. The Nepali rupee plunged to an all-time low against the US dollar on Friday when the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) fixed the selling rate of one US dollar at Rs. 126.66. Earlier on Thursday, the exchange rate of a dollar was Rs. 126.65 and it was Rs. 126.34 on Wednesday. Under the current system, the exchange rates quoted by different commercial banks may differ, the NRB said.
