Manage Issue Of Migrants

As we reach 2023, it is evident that the world is growing more and more unstable. Wars, violence and economic crisis have put many countries and people in a difficult situation. So, to just survive and thrive, a large number of people are migrating across borders, fuelling migrant crisis throughout the globe. If we take the case of Venezuela, the Latin American nation has been going through economic and political crises perennially.

Media reports show that since 2015, around 7 million Venezuelans have fled their homeland. And of this figure, around 6 million people are now living in other neighbouring countries, including Colombia and Peru. Many have also fled to Mexico, just so that they can cross the borders to enter the United States. Mexico now holds an overflowing number of migrants. However, the border policies in the case of the United States are strict under the Biden administration. So, asylum-seeking is not easy for many, forcing the migrants to be in Mexico, with no other alternatives.

Just a few days ago, more than three dozen migrants were reported to have died in Mexico. The unfortunate migrants were from Venezuela and other Central American countries such as Honduras and Guatemala. The asylum-seekers had been placed in migration detention centres. No sooner had they heard about the Mexican government’s decision to deport them than they resorted to protest against the move. The migrants in the detention centre seem to have set fire to mattresses. That led to an outbreak of fire in the centre. A video shows fire blazing inside the locked space.

The migrants are seen as desperate, asking authorities for help to get them out. Few authorities passed by but none of them lent a helping hand to them. As a result, the migrants lost their lives to the fire.  While countries like Mexico are facing issues of managing immigrants, it is more painful to see their wretched condition. They are risking their lives and putting everything at stake just for a better life for themselves and their families. Just a few months ago, we heard about how the Rohingya Muslims travelled for weeks and months in wooden boats, under dire conditions so that they could reach Indonesia with the hope of starting a new life. And the same goes for people in Afghanistan and in the Middle East.

With rising crises, the migrant issue remains to be a matter of grave concern. In this critical situation, it is very important that international organisations and countries come together to support asylum-seekers. To tackle the huge influx of immigrants across countries, it is very important to look back at the root causes of this problem. But tackling the main factors behind this issue is easier said than done. Also, there is a big need for regional cooperation. Creating more legal ways for the migrants is essential as well.

We need to understand that these migrants are not taking risky journeys just for anything, they have a reason and it is a serious one. It is very important that they do not get treated in an inhumane manner as such. Their situation has forced them to migrate to other countries. This is really a humanitarian issue. This problem needs to be handled in a better way. For this, all the responsible countries and organisations should consider it seriously.
