by Nabin Raj Kuikel,Lamjung, Jan. 2: The 13th Topi Day was celebrated in Besisahar, the headquarters of Lamjung, with much fanfare on Thursday.

The day was observed under the auspices of various organisations as the National Dress and Topi Day.

With the slogan ‘Nepali Topi: Our Identity,’ this day has been celebrated for the past 13 years.

The National Dress and Topi Day was first observed in 2070 BS to establish the Daura-Suruwal, Topi, and Gunyo-Choli as a symbol of Nepali identity among the youth. The day has been celebrated annually on January 1 for the past 13 years.

On this occasion, a rally was held in Besisahar Bazaar on Thursday, organised by the Rotary Club of Lamjung with support from the District Police Office Lamjung, Lamjung Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Rotaract Club, Lions Club of Lamjung, and other organisations.

Participants wore Dhaka and Bhadgaunle topis while carrying the national flag.

Commenting on the event, Guman Singh Aryal, Mayor of Besisahar Municipality, said that Topi Day is relevant to preserving Nepali identity amid the influence of Western culture.

He added that the Nepali Topi, reflecting the nation’s identity, is among the most attractive hats in the world.

Shreekrishna Lamichhane, President of the Rotary Club of Lamjung, said that since the Dhaka Topi represents Nepali identity and holds significant value both nationally and internationally, Topi Day is celebrated throughout the year.

Bharat Kumar Shrestha, President of the Lamjung Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stressed that amid foreign cultural influences, the government should give special importance to Topi Day to preserve Nepali identity.

According to cultural experts, Dambar Kumari, sister of Jang Bahadur Rana, made the first Topi as a gift to her brother. Nepalis living abroad, as well as Nepali-speaking communities, also continue to wear Nepali Topis (hats).

Ram Kumar Shrestha, President of the Janjati Federation Lamjung, said that Topi Day is significant in promoting the use of Nepali Topis worldwide.
