World Environment Day being marked today

blog

Kathmandu, June 5: World Environment Day 2026 is being celebrated today with the theme "Foundation for a Prosperous Future: Climate and Nature-Friendly Development". Various events are being held in different venues to commemorate the Day.

On the occasion, the Department of Environment is organizing a special event in Lalitpur at the presence of Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary.

Government agencies, development partners, environmentalists and stakeholders are scheduled to attend the event, the Department stated.

Director General of the Department, Gyanraj Subedi, said that the Day is being marked to awaken communities for the promotion of a nature-friendly development, conserve environment and combat the challenges of climate change impacts.

Likewise, the UN has mentioned that World Environment Day 2026 as a 'Global Call for Climate Action'.

"The planet doesn’t argue. It doesn’t negotiate. It sends signals—rising seas, raging wildfires, heatwaves, melting glaciers. For decades, the world has heard the climate story—warnings, targets, distant deadlines. Too often, the response has been clouded by noise: delay, distraction, denial," it said.

World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate change—on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back and the UNEP’s global campaign calls on all to step in now for climate, and steer a world already in motion.(RSS)
