Kathmandu, Nov 19: The World Toilet Day is being observed today.
The Day established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001 was later made official with United Nations observation since 2013.
According to the UN Water, the Day is marked to inspire everyone for actions to cope with sanitation crisis. It is worrying that 3.4 billion people are still living without safely managed sanitation in the world.
The theme for this year's Toilet Day is- ‘Sanitation in a Changing World'. It reminds us that no matter what the future holds, we’ll always need the toilet.
On this occasion, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said, "It’s time to speed up access to future-ready toilets that are accessible, climate-resilient, low-emission, and well-funded. The toilet is a mundane marvel. And access to one is a matter of rights, and survival."
The global leader further reminded that safe sanitation is a cornerstone of public health and human dignity at a time when the world is facing climate pressures, urban sprawl and inequality on rise.(RSS)
