Jhapa, March 5: A condolence assembly was organized at Sukhani of Jhapa district today to pay tributes to five martyrs of 'Jhapa Rebellion'.
On March 4, 1973, five leaders associated with the 'Jhapa Rebellion-arrested by the then Panchayat state system- were shot and executed in broad daylight at a jungle in Sukhani in Jhapa after being brought from Chandragadhi in Jhapa district under the pretext of shifting them to another prison in Ilam district.
Those executed ones were Ramnath Dahal, Netra Ghimire, Biren Rajbanshi, Krishna Kuikel and Narayan Shrestha.
Leaders and cadres of CPN (UML), CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist) reached Martyr Memorial Park at Sukhani jungle and garlanded the statues of the martyrs over different times.
Various communist parties in Nepal have been observing 'Falgun 21' as the Martyrs Memorial Day in memory of the martyrs of 'Jhapa Rebellion'.
The erstwhile government on March 2, 2016 had recognized those five martyrs who scarified their lives at Sukhani as the national martyrs.
Statues of these martyrs have been built at Jyamirgadhi, Salbari and Garamani of Jhapa. Communist parties including ruling CPN (UML) today separately organized condolence assembly at these places.
At Jyamirgadhi of Mechinagar-15, the family members of martyr Biren Rajbanshi were honoured along with Durga Adhikari who endured 17 years of imprisonment during the 'Jhapa Revolt'. (RSS)
