Jhapa, June 4: Mechinagar Municipality in the district has established safe spaces in two wards targeting victims of gender-based violence.
The scheme is launched with the support of the World Bank. It is enforced as part of the project on control of gender-based violence and access to responses forwarded by the municipality as a long-term plan.
Chief of women, children and social welfare section at the municipality, Jayanti Kharel, informed that safe space was managed as part of the project to ensure safety to women and girls.
Currently, ward no 8 and 15 have such facility from where anyone suffering gender-based violence would receive necessary aid- like rescue, shelter and psychological to the needy children, women and girls. The employees at municipality extend support and facilitation in addition to security from police and legal and health services.
A case handling manager, a psychologist and a case worker are appointed at the facility to cater emergency support to the victims. A case worker from Mechinagar-8, Shanti Mehara, informed that they were ready to identify the girls and adolescents suffering violence and provide them necessary support.
