Kathmandu, Nov. 9: The cookbook Mystic Kitchens of Nepal by Chef Bikram Vaidya has been launched in Nepal.
Minister for Health and Population Pradip Paudel released the cookbook amid a programme held in Kathmandu on Friday. Earlier, the cookbook was launched in the United States of America on October 26, 2024.
Releasing the book, Minister Paudel commended Chef Vaidya for his contribution to promoting Nepali food culture and cuisine in the international arena through the comprehensive cookbook.
Food is important not only to sustain life but it is also closely connected to the health, culture and traditions of the people, he said, adding that the cookbook would be a milestone in preserving rich Nepali food culture.
Vice Chairman of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) Ram Prasad Sapkota said that food is an important part of tourism and it could have a significant role in promoting Nepali tourism.
He said that the cookbook of Chef Vaidya would be supportive of the NTB in promoting Nepali tourism at both domestic and international levels.
Speaking about his book, Chef Vaidya said his book was the result of his intensive study, research, and practice in the sector for over 20 years.
"The Mystic Kitchens of Nepal is more than just a cookbook—it’s a celebration of the deep connection between food, culture and community through the soil to the soul," Vaidya said.
He said that the nomination of his book for the prestigious James Bread Award has been accepted.
The cookbook features over 140 original recipes related to Nepal’s varied landscapes and cultures with insightful commentary on the cultural and historical significance of the dishes.
Chef Vaidya, a respected culinary educator with two decades of experience, has painstakingly curated this collection to honour both well-known Nepali classics and hidden cuisine from various ethnic communities.
Chef Vaidya has spent much of his career teaching and inspiring others through his work at institutions such as the Le Cordon Bleu and Oregon Culinary Institute in the United States of America. His journey has now come full circle as he brings his deep love for Nepalese food culture to the world stage with this comprehensive cookbook.
According to Vaidya, a portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to support the education of women and children in Nepal, as per his commitment to giving back to the homeland.
