By Sadan Gharti, Myagdi, Aug 13: The orchards of Mustang, a district across the mountain, known as apple 'hub' are now in full bloom.

The farmers of Mustang, who have been plating millet on their farm, have recently been attracted to the cultivation of apples.

According to the head of Prime Minister's Agriculture Modernization project Unit Mustang Netra Prasad Bhatta, it is estimated that apple production will increase by 30 to 40 per cent compared to last year due to the effectiveness of the programs conducted through the zone under the project unit, favorable weather, reduction disease and insect infestation and professional management of apple orchid.

Apples are being cultivated in only 585 hectares of the area of 1,410 hectares in the district. Apples of high density are being produced in 60 per cent of the area and locally advanced varieties in 40 per cent of the area.

90 per cent of the total 4,975 metric tons of apple produce was exported outside the district last year and 10 per cent was consumed within the district.

According to Karma Gurung, owner of the Chiumle Orchard Farm located in the Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, Langmothang, said that apple production will increase this year compared to last year.
