By Our Special Correspondent,London, July 14: Senior ophthalmologist Dr. Sanduk Ruit has been awarded an honorary Doctorate in Science by the United Kingdom's Anglia Ruskin University (ARU).
Vice Chancellor Professor Roderick Watkins awarded Dr. Ruit the degree during the University's convocation ceremony at Cambridge on Tuesday. He also called Ruit an "inspiration" who was not just an eye surgeon but a person dedicated to humanitarian service.
Receiving the doctorate, Dr. Ruit appreciated the research being done by ARU's Vision and Eye Research Institute. Dr. Raju Sapkota, senior research fellow at the Institute, who was with Ruit at the ceremony told The Rising Nepal that Ruit expressed an interest in collaborating with the Institute in the future.
The University recognised Dr. Ruit as a renowned ophthalmologist who, as the founder of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology and involved in the Himalayan Cataract Project, has helped over 150,000 people gain their vision. The Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation, which he established in collaboration with British social worker Tej Kohli in 2021, aims to screen the eyes of 1 million people and treat 300,000 people with eye complications.
