By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Mar.1: The Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS) organised a Geotechnical Model Competition at the Pulchowk Campus of the Institute of Engineering on Sunday.
The event was held as a pre-programme to the first NGS International Conference Series, GeoMandu, which is scheduled to be held in Kathmandu on March 16 and 17.
Seven engineering colleges participated in the competition and 40 undergraduate students presented seven geotechnical models. The models were evaluated by an eight-member judging committee.
As per a press release issued by the Society, the models presented were built under the themes of slope failure protection, ground shaking pattern, soil liquefaction, ground settlement, glacial lake outburst flood, ground improvement techniques, geotechnical structures, soil structure interaction, geotechnical disasters led by failure of engineering structures, slope protection systems, hazard management practices and groundwater. The models showcased the damages caused by landslides and earthquakes to physical infrastructure and mitigation measures.
The Society stated in the statement that these themes were pertinent because Nepal was experiencing a rise in disasters due to uncoordinated infrastructure development and insensitive construction work towards risks.
According to the organisers, the competition was observed by more than 400 visitors.
