By Liladhar Oli,Ghorahi, Feb. 15: Chief Minister of Lumbini Province Leela Giri has said that the country has witnessed changes because of the martyrs’ sacrifice and struggle.

Unveiling a life-size statue of Nepal’s first martyr Lakhan Thapa installed in Lakhan Park of Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City-14, CM Giri stressed the need for institutionalising the achieved changes.

“We have achieved this system through the sacrifice and struggle of martyrs,” he said, adding, “It is necessary to institutionalise the system we have achieved now.”

“Martyrs had sacrificed their life for the welfare of people. There was a time when rulers used to oppress their people. Martyrs Thapa had fought against the ruler to restore democracy. In return the ruler announced death penalty against them,” he added.

He also appreciated the works done in Ghorahi to pay tribute to martyr Thapa.

“Time has come to institutionalise the achievements and create employment opportunities in the country,” he added.

Laxman Singh Thapa of Kahule Bhangar in Gorkha had worked hard to overthrow the rule of Jung Bahadur Rana.

He had mobilised the armed forces against Jung Bahadur for the first time by changing his name as Lakhan Thapa Magar.

He, along with several of his friends, was captured and tortured to death by the forces of Rana.
