Balen wins Jhapa-5 by huge margin

blog

Kathmandu, Mar. 8: Balendra Shah ‘Balen’, the senior leader of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has been elected to the House of Representatives (HoR) from Jhapa Constituency-5, defeating former Prime Minister and powerful CPN-UML chairman KP Sharma Oli by a huge margin of 49,614 votes.

According to the Election Commission, Shah garnered 68,348 votes, while Oli received 18,734 votes.

Balen, the former Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, contested the election against Oli with the determination to defeat the seasoned politician, who had been winning elections from Jhapa constituency since 1990.

Likewise, Samir Tamang of the Shram Sanskriti Party finished third with 9,233 votes, followed by Mandhara Chimariya of the Nepali Congress (NC) with 1,821 votes.  Laxmi Prasad Sangraula of Rastriya Prajatantra Party with 1,536 votes.

Following the Gen-Z protests on September 8–9, Oli has faced widespread criticism and public backlash over the handling of the movement and the deaths of young protesters. He resigned and flew to a safe place on September 9 last year.

He looked helpless before Balen in the constituency that was his stronghold in the elections held six months after the fall of his government.

Oli served as prime minister thrice and led the UML for decades. His defeat by Shah, who is widely seen as representing an alternative political force, reflects growing public frustration over issues such as bad governance and corruption. His defeat is likely to mark the end of his political career.

Likewise, RSP president Rabi Lamichhane has won the election from Chitwan, winning by a margin of 39,838 votes.

Lamichhane secured 54,402 votes, while his closest contender, Mina Kumari Kharel of NC, received 14,564 votes. Ashmin Kharel of the UML finished third with 6,992 votes.

Lamichhane was first elected to the HoR from Chitwan-2 in 2022, winning by a margin of 34,170 votes. However, he was later suspended over a dual citizenship case. In the April 2023 by-election, he returned with an even stronger mandate, garnering 54,175 votes and defeating his nearest rival by a margin of over 43,000 votes.
