blog

By A Staff Reporter Kathmandu, May 30: Four films, including three Nepali productions, were released in theatres on Friday.

The films ‘Shape of Momo’, ‘Roll No. 1’, ‘Kumbh’, and the Hollywood film ‘Passenger’ are now showing in cinemas.

‘Shape of Momo’, the debut feature film by Sikkim-based filmmaker Tribeny Rai, was released simultaneously in Nepal and India on Friday.

The film’s release is being supported by Indian actor and producer Rana Daggubati through his company, Spirit Media. The film also features executive producers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Payal Kapadia.

Produced by Dalley Khorsani Production and co-produced by Kathkala Films, the film portrays the story of three generations of women within a single family against the backdrop of a Himalayan village in Sikkim. It explores life, relationships, silence, emotional inheritance, and identity, while also deeply examining the emotional meaning of home.

Artists, including the late Bhanu Maya Rai, Gaumaya Gurung, Pashupati Rai, Rahul Mukhiya, and Shyamasree Sherpa, have acted in the film.

The film has already been screened at prestigious international festivals, including the Busan International Film Festival and the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it received awards and critical acclaim.

Likewise, another film, ‘Roll No. 1’, has been produced by Binod Poudel, who previously produced the successful film ‘Purna Bahadurko Sarangi’. Directed by John Yonjan, the film explores how government scholarships and the pressure to secure the top roll number affect children’s psychology.

Artists including Mukun Bhusal, Sushank Mainali, Renu Yogi, and Sirjana Adhikari play leading roles in the film.

The other release, ‘Kumbh’, is an Indo-Nepal collaborative project. It is an intense Nepali action drama directed by Randhir Shrestha.

Blending action and romance, the film features South Indian actor Surendra Thakur and adopts a filmmaking style similar to South Indian cinema. The film also stars Ashok Aryan, Sunil Thapa, and Sushil Pokharel.

Apart from the new releases, ‘Lalibazar’, ‘Kaji’, and ‘Life Damage’ are still screening in cinemas.

Released on May 8, ‘Lalibazar’ is continuing to perform well both commercially and critically in the Nepali cinemas.
