Equal access for women in decision-making essential, says Minister Badi

Kathmandu, May 30: Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security Sita Badi pointed out the importance of collaborative efforts among all stakeholders to ensure equal access for women in decision-making processes.

Speaking at a programme organized here on Saturday to mark the 8th National Women's Rights Day, Minister Badi acknowledged the Nepali women had made proud and historic contributions to various movements and causes such as democracy, social justice, human rights and national sovereignty. 

She noted that the rights guaranteed to women by the Constitution of Nepal are achievements earned through decades of struggle, sacrifice and dedication by women.

On a different note, the Minister shared that the incumbent government has been implementing several programmes aimed at improving women's access to education, health services, employment, entrepreneurship, social security and sustainable livelihoods.

She attributed the notably increasing participation of women in various spheres including political, administrative and social sectors to host of policy, legal and structural reforms adopted by the State.

Highlighting the government's commitment to inclusivity, the Minister observed that the Ministry's name (from earlier Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens to Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security) itself reflected the recognition and inclusion of sexual and gender minority communities, ensuring their right to live with dignity and respect.

Likewise, Top Bahadur Magar, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, argued that human rights couldn't be fully strengthened without respect for and effective implementation of women's rights.

He reiterated, "Only a society with strong human rights can ensure a strong status for women's rights."

Also speaking in the event, Radhika Aryal, Secretary at the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security called for increased efforts and investment to bring meaningful and positive changes in the lives of women.

During the event, outstanding women entrepreneurs selected from across the country were honoured and awarded in recognition of their contributions and achievements. (RSS)
