By A Staff Reporter.Kathmandu, Nov. 10: Nepal’s veteran cricketer Sharad Vesawkar has officially hung up his bat from international cricket, announcing his retirement on Sunday. He had earlier confirmed that the Hong Kong Sixes would be his swansong in national colours.

Although named captain for the Hong Kong Sixes, Vesawkar didn’t feature in the group stage matches. He only padded up for the Bowl League clash against Sri Lanka, where he was dismissed for a solitary run. In the remaining fixtures, Sundeep Jora took over the reins and led the side. Jora expressed gratitude for Vesawkar’s immense contribution to Nepali cricket.

As Nepal wrapped up their campaign in Hong Kong finishing in the 11th place, Vesawkar was given a fitting farewell — teammates lined up to form a guard of honour, saluting his illustrious career.

Soon after, the 37-year-old shared a heartfelt message on social media: “Thank you Nepal Cricket and everyone. Time to say goodbye.”

Vesawkar’s journey in cricket spans over two decades. He rose through the ranks from the U15 national team in 2002, making his senior debut in 2004 against the UAE. His final outing in national colours came in 2022.

He played a crucial role in Nepal’s historic debut at the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup and was instrumental again in 2018 when Nepal earned ODI status.

His match-winning knock in the 2014 World Cup qualifier remains etched in memory as one of Nepal’s finest cricketing moments. For his feat, he was popular as a finisher in Nepali cricket scene.

Over the years, Vesawkar also clinched several domestic titles, showcasing his class and composure under pressure.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) paid tribute to the veteran via social media, writing: “Thank you Sharad for innings that defied belief and turned pressure into poetry. You ignited a spark of inspiration for generations. Wishing you the best in your second innings.” Social media was flooded with retirement wishes and tributes to the legend.

Paras Khadka, CAN Secretary and former captain, posted: “Congratulations for your service and dedication to Nepal cricket over the last two decades. Best wishes for the next chapter ahead.”

Current skipper Rohit Paudel wrote: “Sharad Dai! Thank you for your contribution to Nepali cricket. You’ve inspired countless youngsters, and I’ve always admired your calm demeanour on the field. Wishing you the best for your second innings.”

Star leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane added: “Thank you, Sharad Vesawkar Dai, for your incredible contribution. From unforgettable knocks to unwavering dedication, you’ve been a pillar of Nepali cricket. Your passion and leadership have inspired generations. A true legend — best wishes for your second innings.”

Former captain Gyanendra Malla also penned a touching tribute: “After nearly two decades of service, Sharad was the steady hand behind many of our historic wins. From a promising youngster to a senior statesman, he carried the hopes of a nation with grace and skill. He didn’t just play for Nepal — he helped shape its cricketing identity. Thank you, Sharad. Best wishes for your future endeavours.”
