Girls conference to make child marriage-free rural municipality

By Dharbendra Jha, Dec 27: To declare a child marriage-free municipality, a girls' conference was held on Friday in the premises of BP Secondary School located in Sapahi of Laxminiya Rural Municipality of Dhanusha.

In the girls' conference jointly organized by Life Nepal and Laxminiya Rural Municipality with the support of Girls First Fund, girls expressed their views on what should be done to end child marriage.

Girls said that due to economic poverty and lack of awareness, misconceptions like child marriage are increasing and to end this, girls should be aware of each other and move forward.

At the conference, girls were given self-defence training on how to protect themselves in problematic situations.

Along with the presentation of public awareness, songs prepared on stopping child marriage, the folk dances of Mithila region, Mijhiya and Samachakewa, were presented at the girls' conference.

The program was organised under the chairmanship of BP Secondary School Girl Club's president Pratima Yadav. Chairman of  Laxminiya Rural Municipality, Bhogendra Mishra said that child marriage is a curse for society and he is committed to ending it.

He said that within a few months, the Lakshminian rural municipality has taken forward the work in collaboration with Life Nepal with the goal of declaring a child marriage-free rural municipality.

During the program, Surait Thakur, President of Life Nepal, expressed his happiness that his organization has been working to end child marriage in Laxminian Rural Municipality since 2019 and the incidence of child marriage has decreased to 22 per cent, which was 49 per cent at that time.
