By Meena Kandel,Kawasoti, Oct. 8: The flood that occurred on September 27 and 28 has completely destroyed 100 houses and two schools in Madhyabindu Municipality of Nawalparasi East.
According to Bhimlal Adhikari, the mayor of Madhyabindu Municipality, the flood and inundation in wards no. 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, and 15, which are located in the Narayani River basin, have damaged 431 houses and of them, 100 houses were damaged completely.
In ward number 2 of Madhyabindu, 70 out of 310 households in Sehari were completely damaged, according to Ward Chairman Ram Bhakta Adhikari.
Similarly, 18 out of 62 households in ward number 6 and 12 out of 59 households in ward number 15 were completely destroyed.
The flood also affected about 536 hectares of agricultural land, causing damage to crops. The loss includes damage worth Rs. 60,000 on six kattha of lemon farming and 8.5 hectares of vegetable and fruit crops.
According to Bikash Narsingh Rana, assistant administrative officer of Madhyabindu Municipality, this has resulted in a loss of other crops worth approximately Rs. 22.48 million and vegetable damage amounting to Rs. 1.13 million.
Additionally, 22,573 domestic birds and cattle died in the municipality, leading to a loss of Rs. 2 million. He also said the damage incurred to 13.33 hectares of fish ponds, 50 bighas of straw, and 70,000 eggs.
Chief District Officer Arun Pokhrel said that the flood has severely impacted food crops in the district.
Although accurate figures of the damage are yet to come, about 795 houses in the district have been partially damaged. Furthermore, 246 ducks and 44,500 chickens have died, and many fish from fish ponds have been washed away, resulting in an estimated loss of about Rs. 100.9 million.
Relief distribution and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-affected areas have been centred in Madhyabindu Municipality.
The municipality, in collaboration with Save the Children Nepal, Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal and the Social Security Civil Society Network, has distributed relief materials in the area, according to CDO Pokhrel. The municipality has been providing essentials like utensils, blankets, sanitation materials and food supplies.
