From hope to hiatus: Sudan Gurung’s post-resignation trail

blog

Kathmandu, May 7: When Sudan Gurung stepped down as Home Minister on April 22, just 26 days after assuming office, the move marked a dramatic pause in the rapid political ascent of one of the country’s most prominent youth leaders. In the weeks since, his public silence has only deepened curiosity about his current position, both politically and personally.

Gurung’s resignation came at a time of intensifying scrutiny over his financial disclosures, business links and alleged shareholdings. Questions surrounding transparency and potential conflicts of interest had begun to dominate both mainstream and social media discourse.

Reports indicated that he faced criticism over undisclosed investments and possible associations with individuals under investigation, prompting calls from opposition parties and civil society for an independent investigation.

Amid growing pressure, including protests in Kathmandu and demands from youth-led groups, Gurung announced his resignation, stating that the move was necessary to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.

In his resignation statement, shared publicly and across social media platforms, he emphasised ethics and accountability: stepping down, he said, would avert any conflict of interest and uphold public trust.

Since his resignation, the government has not appointed a successor. Prime Minister Balendra Shah currently holds the Home Ministry portfolio himself. Some have interpreted this as a sign that Gurung could return to office if he comes clean about the charges.

Amid all this, questions remain about how the probe into Gurung’s share investment sources and other financial transactions will move forward.

So far, no formal complaint has been filed against him, leaving the exact nature of the investigation unclear. Thus, it remains uncertain whether he will be investigated by a parliamentary probe committee, the RSP’s Disciplinary Commission, or directly by the Department of Money Laundering Investigation.

Social media surge, and silence

In the days leading up to his resignation, Gurung’s name trended widely across Nepali social media, reflecting a surge of public debate.

Posts and reports circulated highlighting his financial investments, while images and past affiliations were widely shared and scrutinised online.

Following his resignation announcement, also made through social platforms, there was a brief wave of reactions, ranging from support for his decision to calls for deeper investigation.

However, since stepping down, Gurung has largely withdrawn from digital engagement. There have been no notable public statements, posts, or direct responses from him addressing the controversy, an absence that contrasts sharply with his earlier, highly visible political style.

Before entering government, Gurung had emerged as a central figure in the country’s youth-driven political transformation. He played a key role in the 2025 Gen Z protests that contributed to the previous administration and the rise of a reformist government led by the Rastriya Swatantra Party.

His appointment as Home Minister on March 27, 2026 symbolised a generational shift in Nepali politics, bringing a relatively young, activist-turned-politician into one of the most powerful ministries.

During his brief tenure, Gurung initially drew attention for bold actions, including high-profile arrests linked to past protest violence investigations.

Maintains a low profile

According to James Karki, who was appointed as personal secretary at Gurung’s Secretariat as Home Minister, Gurung remains in Kathmandu, maintaining a low profile while staying informally engaged with political developments and public concerns.

He is said to be holding limited meetings and keeping track of ongoing issues, but without making public appearances or issuing statements. His current routine appears deliberately restrained, reflecting either a strategic pause or a period of recalibration.

However, security analyst Hemanta Malla Thakuri said that Gurung’s resignation has left unanswered questions, not only about the allegations themselves but also about his political future.

For a figure once seen as a symbol of a new political era, his next move will be closely watched. Whether he returns to public life with renewed credibility or remains in the background may depend largely on the outcome of any investigations and the evolving public perception of his brief but eventful tenure.
