Beauty Of Terai

blog

Home is where the heart is, and for me, Terai has always felt like home. I was born in Jhapa, a part of Terai, but grew up in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Whenever I passionately talk about the beauty of Terai and how it feels like home to me, people often ask, “Terai? What about Terai? Which part of Terai?” I can never pinpoint one specific place because Terai as a whole feel like home to me. Whether it’s the people, the warm air, the food, the culture, the festivals, the nature, or the hospitality, or maybe all of it, Terai is special in every way.

For me, the idea of travelling or going on vacation has always meant visiting Terai. I don’t visit just one place. I explore different parts of Terai each time, and wherever I go, it always feels like home. Terai is often underrated; its beauty and the peace it provides are rarely recognised since the country is more celebrated for its hills and mountains. That doesn’t mean I don’t love the mountains—I do—but when comparing, it’s Terai that captures my heart.

Terai is rich with its spicy and flavourful foods, chaotic yet colourful markets, peaceful rivers, and great hospitality from people who always welcome you with a smile and a delicious cup of tea.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Terai is its rich and vibrant food culture. Every corner of this region offers delicious food, and the street food of Terai is especially hard to resist. In Janakpur, Jalebi Puri, Lassi, and the traditional Mithila Thali are a must-try. Jhapa, on the other hand, tempts you with its Bhakka and Chatpate; fresh fish of Koshi is a must try, while Birgunj is a heaven for street food lovers with its Pav Bhaji, Pani Puri, and an array of other mouthwatering street foods. And let's not forget the sweets—the Terai is a paradise for those with a sweet tooth.

Beyond the food, it is the people of the Terai who leave an indelible mark on your heart.

Their kindness and hospitality are legendary. They welcome you with open arms and a warm smile, often accompanied by a steaming cup of tea. This genuine warmth makes you feel at home, no matter where you come from.

The natural beauty of the Terai is another aspect that often goes unnoticed. The ponds scattered across the region, particularly those in Janakpur, Rajbiraj, and Simraungadh, with their historical value, are peaceful and pretty. These ponds offer a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, providing a moment of peace and reflection. The sunsets in Terai are something that should not be missed, as they paint the sky with colours that are simply breathtaking. Paddy fields are another valuable aspect of the Terai. They are not only beautiful but also contribute significantly to the economy of the whole nation.

Despite its many wonders, the Terai is often underappreciated. It is a region that deserves more applause for its beauty, culture, and warmth. From the lush green forests to the welcoming people, from the delicious food to the vibrant festivals, Terai has so much to offer. Terai may not be the first picture that comes to mind when you think of Nepal, but for me, it's the essence of home.

Its unique blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality is unmatched. So, next time you plan a trip to Nepal, make sure to explore the plains of the Terai; you won’t be disappointed.
