blog

BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, Aug. 15: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh held discussions with experts in regard to increasing the water flow in the Bagmati, Bishnumati and other rivers in the Kathmandu Valley on Wednesday.

During a meeting at the ministry, Deputy Prime Minister Singh consulted with experts to gather their opinions on short-, medium- and long-term plans to ensure clean water flows in the Bagmati, Bishnumati and other rivers.

Since assuming office, Singh has focused on revitalising the rivers in the Valley, keeping Kathmandu clean and managing waste and has intensified discussions on possible solutions.

He said, "Foul smell has spread due to reduction of water flow in the rivers. We are considering whether it would be beneficial to increase the water flow in the rivers by installing boring machines in some locations."

Meanwhile, Secretary at the Ministry, Maniram Gelal, said that discussions with experts were held regarding immediate measures to increase water flow by installing boreholes at certain locations from Sundarijal to Teku. Additionally, they also discussed the possibility of storing water for boating from Shankhamul to Kupandol.

During the discussion, experts provided their opinions on the technical feasibility of increasing water flow in Kathmandu's rivers during the dry season. Some suggested that the option of increasing water flow through boreholes could be used as a short-term measure, while others emphasised the need to assess the impact of such measures.

Former Minister Ganesh Shah praised the ministry’s initiative to start discussions with experts on increasing water flow in the Valley’s rivers and managing waste. "Let’s think about working in a different way from what is being done now," he said. "We must involve citizens in matters like river cleanup and waste management."
