Nepal experienced a significant decline in the inflow of both international and domestic tourists due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the government to cancel the already announced Visit Nepal 2020 campaign. Tourism activities are bouncing back in the post-pandemic recovery phase now but challenges still remain. In response to the challenges faced by this sector, the Bharatpur Metropolitian City has rolled out the Visit Bharatpur 2024 initiative as a strategic plan to revitalise Chitwan’s tourism industry. This promotion scheme aims to attract domestic and foreign visitors to Bharatpur, thereby boosting the tourism activities. The campaign seeks to stimulate economic growth, promote cultural exchange, and rejuvenate the tourism sector in the region. Exploring Bharatpur through the Visit Bharatpur 2024, the programme seeks to lure visitors with a unique attractions offered by the metropolis.
Apart from the scenic allure of the Narayani and Rapti River, the popular sites Devghatdham, Umbrella Street, and Diyalo Bangala add layers of cultural and historic glimpses to the place. One of the main highlights of Bharatpur lies in its rich indigenous culture, featuring the traditions of the Tharu community as well as the distinctive lifestyle of the Bote and Majhi people. These cultural facets provide visitors with a fascinating glimpse into the diverse heritage of the region, offering unique cultural experiences as well as the hospitality of the local people to the visitors. Chitwan offers an opportunity for tourists to engage with the local community, partake in cultural festivals and savour the authentic flavours of the Tharu cuisine.
With two medical colleges and many hospitals Bharatpur Metropolis is developing itself as a medical hub. Under Mayor Renu Dahal's leadership after the 2017 and 2022 elections, the city has made phenomenal progress in terms of infrastructure development and revenue generation. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda inaugurated the tourism promotion event and expressed his belief that the visit year will contribute significantly to developing Chitwan as a commercial, medical and tourism hub.
PM Prachanda was joined by former prime ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba, KP Sharma Oli and Madhav Kumar Nepal along with other prominent leaders from major political parties who gave a message of unity and solidarity on the occasion. The Chitwan National Park, popular as the home to the Royal Bengal Tiger and Asian One-horned Rhino, is certainly the main attraction of the place. The Narayani River area is a popular destination for migratory birds throughout the world. With luxurious five-star hotels to typical Tharu homestays, Bharatpur has taken a giant leap in the construction of the hospitality infrastructure.
Bharatpur metropolis is setting an example in the development model and will establish new standards once the ongoing pride projects such as the Ring Road, six-lane road, Narayani embankment, City Hall, Gautam Buddha International Stadium, and Narayani sea beach are completed. The municipal endeavours and advancements in the development of Bharatpur Metropolitan City are appreciated by all. Around 190,500 tourists arrived in Chitwan in 2023. Bharatpur Visit Year will promote more than 50 destinations from Sauraha in Ratnanagar Municipality to Someshwar Gadhi in Madi Municipality, Parewakot in Rapti, Kumroz in Khairhani, Sinte Waterfall in Kalika, Maulakalika in Gaindakot, Siraichuli in Ichchhakamana and so on. Visit Bharatpur is expected to be a milestone in the promotion of tourism in the country and make this destination known to the world.
