Dr. Niraula's song speaks against rape

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, May 9: Dr. Suraj Niraula, a US-based neuroscientist, has released the philanthropic song Chhori, raising his voice for rape victims.

Originally from Biratnagar, Dr. Niraula composed the song based on Nirmala Pant’s rape and murder case.

Using beautiful video animation and sketches, the song portrays the cases of Nirmala Pant, Bhagirathi Bhatta, and Inisha BK.

The song was composed to generate awareness against such crimes and support the affected victims and their families.

Composer and lyricist Dr. Niraula emphasised that sex education, including understanding consent and respecting others’ bodies and decisions, is essential in preventing such crimes.

“This is not only a song, but also a cry of suffering, of buds nipped before they could ever bloom, of dreams stolen before they could ever be seen, and of throats crushed while breath still remained,” reads the message shown at the beginning of the video.

Featuring vocals by Sajja Chaulagain and Kobid Bazra, and produced by Sanskrit and Savyata Music, the song appeals for justice for the victims.Composer Dr. Niraula also cited data regarding rape cases in Nepal, urging people to raise their voices against such crimes.

Stating that seven rape cases are reportedly filed every day, he said that his team plans to submit a petition to the government within the next few months.

Dr. Niraula has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Kansas since completing his Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 2023.

When he was young, he used to watch his brother play drums and sing in a band, which inspired him and sparked his passion for music. Earlier, Dr. Niraula had released two other songs, he said.
