By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Feb. 4: Nepal Police Club became the champions in the three-day 3rd Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Memorial National Karate Championship with 10 gold medals. The championship ended on Saturday. Alongside the 10 golds, Nepal Police Club also secured three silvers and a bronze. Nepal Police won two golds on the final day. Biplov Lal Shrestha got a gold in the 84kg+ category defeating Sudur Pashchim’s Lokesh Karki 12-4.
Shrestha is also one of the five athletes nominated for the NSJF Pulsar Sports Award. Similarly, Armed Police Force Club won three golds, five silvers and a bronze and became the runners-up of the tournament. Bagmati secured the third position with two gold, a silver and six bronze medals.
Likewise, Army won a gold, four silver and bronze medals with Sudur Pashchim bagging a gold, a silver and four bronze medals. Karnali’s players were the only ones who did not win a single medal. Meanwhile, Madhes’ players won a silver and six bronze, Koshi won a silver and four bronze, Lumbini won a silver and two bronze and Gandkai won a bronze.
Meanwhile, Ramita Majhi and Kamal Oli were declared as the best players from the women’s and men’s categories respectively. Nirupa Dong and Sahil Nepali were declared as the emerging players from the women’s and men’s categories respectively.
Biplov Lal Shrestha, who won gold in three consecutive editions of the championship, was honoured as the superstar player. Army’s Misli Shrestha was also able to win a gold medal in all three editions. The champion team, Nepal Police, also received a cash prize of Rs. 100,000 with runners-up APF getting Rs. 50,000. The tournament started on February 1.
