Excellent mothers, daughters-in-law awarded

By Our Correspondent,Damak, Feb. 28: Two pairs of mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law were awarded in Mechinagar Municipality, Jhapa, on Monday for the excellent relationship they maintained with each other.

Every year, the Senior Citizen Committee, based in the municipality's Ward No. 6, honours those mothers- and daughters-in-law who create an example for other families and, through their bond, counter the social perception that the two are always at each other's throats.

This year, the Committee awarded the in-law duos of Krishna Kumari Khatri, 59, and Eliza Bhattarai, 29, and Shanta Shrestha, 52, and Jina Shrestha, 32.

Deputy Mayor of Mechinagar Mina Pokharel said that initiatives like these change people's stereotypical assumptions about the relationship between mothers- and daughters-in-law.

Narayan Prasai, president of the Committee, said that they would identify and honour such excellent in-laws every year.Last year, the Committee had awarded six pairs of in-laws.
