The nation is now heading on the path to stability and development as the local elections have lately been held successfully. The elected representatives are in the process of assuming office at local government institutions. The federal parliament has also started discussing the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The government is going to unveil its policy and programmes and the budget on May 21 and May 29, respectively. It must come up with effective plans and programmes to boost the national economy and address the burgeoning issue of joblessness in the country. If we cannot create adequate number of jobs within the country, the tendency of our skilled and muscled manpower going abroad in search of work will not come to a stop. For the employment opportunities to be created at home, we need to accelerate the pace of development. When development activities are given new momentum, job prospects increase.
Overwhelming number of applicants for temporary policemen before the local election shows that unemployment is a serious problem in the country. The longstanding political instability coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic has led to economic slackness. Many people have lost jobs and other sources of livelihood due to the pandemic. The private sector is still grappling with the economic fallout of this global public health crisis. The economic sector, including tourism, has begun recovering with the number of COVID-19 cases falling sharply. It may still take more time for the national economy to return to normalcy. Until it is fully revived, the lost jobs will not be restored.
Almost three times more aspirants (both male and female) had applied for temporary police when the government solicited applications for it. A few of them were well-educated while some others were even university degree holders. The government had hired 100,000 persons as temporary police personnel to help create a fearless environment for holding the local elections in a free and fair manner. After getting formally deployed at polling centres on April 11, they worked together with the country’s security bodies -- Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepali Army and National Investigation Department. Thus, they have contributed significantly to achieving the government’s mission of conducting the elections in a more credible manner.
They started working after taking part in a weeklong policing training. The government has given Rs. 40,000 as salaries and other facilities to each of the temporary police personnel for the period of 40 days. Most of them were capable of showing a better performance in their short-term job. After joining the job, four of them died. Temporary police personnel are getting an emotional farewell today after having completed their 40-day term. Minister for Home Affairs Bal Krishna Khand recently appreciated the temporary police force for their unflinching efforts to maintain election security. Earlier, Khand had asked people to treat the temporary police personnel with respect because they had been deployed at polling centres for ensuring security.
With their satisfactory performance, these persons are likely to have better job opportunities at home and abroad in the future. There has been a growing demand for Nepali security guards and other workers in different countries, including Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain. This is mainly because they are honest, hardworking and friendly. Some of them, however, were also found involved in unsolicited activities. And they faced departmental action accordingly.
