By Harikrishna Sharma,Muktinatha (Mustang), May 16: Paintings reflecting the ancient civilisation of Upper Mustang have been exhibited in Lomanthang Rural Municipality. The solo art exhibition has been organised by artist Tsering Phonjo Gurung from Chhoser, Lomanthang-1.
The art exhibition is on display with the aim of attracting both domestic and international tourists coming to observe the 15th-century historic and cultural Tiji Festival.
A total of 47 paintings, both small and large, have been displayed, depicting the 15th-century historic Lomanthang Palace, caves, monasteries, traditional earthen settlements, indigenous lifestyle, culture, way of life, livestock, and various other features of Upper Mustang’s heritage.
Artist Gurung said that this is his first exhibition held during the Tiji festival in Lomanthang, aiming to promote Upper Mustang internationally through art. He said, “Art reflects the hard work and creativity of an artist.”
Having been engaged in the art profession for over two and a half decades, Gurung also paints traditional lifestyles, Buddhist monasteries, community buildings, and schools. He also sells his artworks online.
Visitors, including foreigners attending the exhibition, have been purchasing the paintings. Foreign visitors praised the artist, saying the natural scenery of Mustang has been vividly captured in his artwork.
As Nepali culture is well appreciated by foreigners, Gurung mentioned that he has been taking his exhibitions to Kathmandu and other places as well. The paintings on display are priced between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 250,000.
Meanwhile, a workshop has also been organised for local people interested in painting.
