By Radha Luitel, Phidim, May 15: A preschooler studying at the Lungrupa Academy of the Phidim Municipality-14, Panchthar district, has suffered from battering by the hands of the school teacher.

Mother of the victim, Sabitra Nembang, said that the school teacher, Sumitra Sendang (Nembang), beat the child aggressively for not being able to write “one” and “two.”

He was beaten with a stick 18 times after he failed to write the numbers properly. The child reportedly became ill following the incident and was admitted to Ganeshman Singh Community Hospital in Phidim on Friday.

"Since my son kept tossing and turning the whole night and could not sleep following a fever. I removed his clothes and saw bruises all over his body. After asking him, we found out that the teacher had beaten him,” Savitra said.

The family informed ward chairperson Rajkumar Nembang about the incident.

Ward chair said the child was in a serious condition when he came to know about the incident and instructed the school to immediately take the student for treatment.

School operator Sanyog Saru Magar said the teacher involved has been suspended and the school administration has agreed to cover the child’s medical expenses.

However, the victim’s family claimed that the school administration had not directly contacted them.

“We have not received any response from the school even after the repetitive call. We only received a message through the operator’s wife saying the school would bear the treatment expenses,” Sabitra said.
