Campaign Every Day Against VAW

blog

Every year, women-related organisations primarily concentrate on activism for societal progress and participate in an annual sixteen-day-long awareness campaign for gender-based violence. Prominent agencies and student clubs across the globe organise certain events to support the initiative from 25th November to 10th December.

When we hear the word violence, most of us tend to associate it with physical abuse, which involves jaw-breaking slaps, punches, and disparaging kicks toward the victim. However, there’s a wide subset of abuse involved. Hurling mean comments to degrade the victim’s overall confidence, stripping them of their basic rights of security, privacy, autonomy, and constant upbraiding and manipulation are all diverse forms of abuse that are often overlooked.

These demeaning actions scar a victim’s life forever. Abusers often create boundaries, which makes victims unable to make decisions concerning their lives. They become isolated and highly dependent upon their perpetrators for resources of food, clothing, and security. Ultimately trapping them in the never-ending chronicle of abuse. Hence, it’s imperative that we, as members of society, show empathy, resources and extend a kind perspective towards women undergoing such traumatic incidents.

We should connect the victims to  organisations such as UNICEF, UN Women, or helplines of the National Women's Commission and the Police. Likewise, we should take a stand for these victims to break barriers that prevent them from opening up and moving on with their lives and build safe spaces that encourage their healing, empowerment, and overall development.

While the sixteen-day-long initiative against Violence Against Women (VAW) for this year has officially commenced, it is of utmost importance that we continue to initiate preventive efforts for a peaceful, secure and steady society.
