President urges Gen-Z groups to contribute for making March 5 election successful

Kathmandu, Oct 16: President Ramchandra Paudel has called on Gen-Z groups to contribute to the successful conduct of the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election, scheduled for March 5, 2026, and to help set a new chapter in Nepal’s democratic history.     

During a meeting held on Thursday at Shital Niwas with Prime Minister Sushila Karki, ministers from the interim government, and Gen-Z activists, the President viewed the upcoming election should not be taken just as a routine political event, but be considered a special opportunity and a prestigious mega campaign for bringing about national transformation.     

“This election was announced in response to the sentiments of the youth-led movement. Its goal is to root out corruption, nepotism, favouritism, and discrimination that the young generation has boldly spoken against,” the President said. “It must not be treated as a mere political formality, but as a historic opportunity to transform the nation.”     

According to Kiran Pokharel, the President’s Press Advisor, the Head of State encouraged young activists to actively consider their roles in the future House of Representatives. He expressed hope that the upcoming election would bring forth candidates dedicated to justice, good governance, and the nation’s progress.     

Although the President holds a largely ceremonial role under Nepal’s Constitution and parliamentary system, Paudel said he held this consultation with the government in the presence of Gen-Z representatives as a gesture of respect for their recent movement and demands. He also expressed hope that the government would address the outstanding concerns raised by the youth movement.     

President Paudel added that the current interim government was formed under the constitutional authority of the presidency to promote national unity, and is in itself an achievement of the youth-led movement that demanded transparency and accountability in governance.     

Prepare for upcoming election     

“I urge all of you to prepare for the upcoming election and treat it as a success of your movement,” he said, also cautioning the youths to remain alert against individuals or groups who may try to address personal or political gains in the name of the movement.     

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sushila Karki commended the President for his relentless efforts to resolving the recent national crisis despite his age and health challenges. She described him as a wise and experienced leader who began his political journey at a young age and continues to serve the nation with conviction.     

In response, Gen-Z representatives clarified that their movement stands for social and economic justice, and is not against the Constitution, democracy, federalism, or inclusion. They reaffirmed their commitment to participating in and facilitating the upcoming election, stressing that their demands must be addressed by validating the movement to create an atmosphere conducive to a fair and inclusive electoral process.     

Those present at the meeting from the Gen-Z community includes Madan Karki, Monika Niraula, Bhoj Bikram Thapa, Shiva Yadav, Uparjun Chamling, Nikunja Bhandari, Rijan Rana, Bablu Gupta, Ojaswiraj Thapa, Purushotam Yadav, Aditya Acharya, Khemraj Saud, Apsana Banu, Pradip Pandey, Gunjan Shah Thakuri, and Dhiraj Joshi.(RSS)
