Former Speaker Mahara remanded to custody

Kathmandu, Oct 15: District Court, Kathmandu has issued an order to remand to custody the former Speaker and Maoist Centre leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara on a gold smuggling case.     

District judge Harka Bahadur Chhetri concluded that the available evidences substantiate the charge that Mahara was involved in the gold smuggling. So, he warranted custody, according to Information Officer at District Court, Dipak Shrestha.     

Mahara will be remanded to Sundhara-based jail.     

A case of gold smuggling was filed against the former Speaker on October 13. Chief of District Attorney in Kathmandu, Ramhari Kafle, shared that the case was filed, demanding the recovery of Rs 85 million and imprisonment of over three years. A hearing on whether to release Mahara on bail or to forward investigation by remanding him in custody had begun on Tuesday.     

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) had arrested the former Speaker and influential leader of the Maoist Centre on October 11 in connection with his involvement in preventing the TIA customs from seizing the gold smuggled in e-vape.(RSS)
