Yamuna crosses danger mark in Delhi; Severe floods claim 37 lives in Punjab

Delhi, Sept 4 (The Hindu): Heavy rain and floods have battered States in northern India in the past few days, causing severe damage to life and property. 

Amidst Punjab witnessing heavy rainfall, around 37 lives have been lost due to severe flood, announced the State government on Thursday (September 4, 2025).

Meanwhile, in the national capital, the water level in the Yamuna River at Old Railway Bridge stood at 207.48 metres on Thursday morning, even as floodwater from the raging river continued to inundate nearby areas.

The Central government has deputed an inter-ministerial team to pay detailed on-ground visits to the flood-affected districts in the Jammu region in the next four days and assess the actual scale of losses and damage caused by recent rains.

37 lives lost due to severe floods, says Punjab government

Around 37 lives have been lost due to severe flooding, announces the State government.

According to government of Punjab, around 1,655 villages have been affected, with Gurdaspur the most affected area of the lot, as 324 villages are impacted by flooding, followed by Ferozepur (111), Amritsar (190), Hoshiarpur (121), Kapurthala (123) and Sangrur (107), whose villages were significantly impacted by floods.

Further, the Punjab government said that around 1,75,216 hectares of total land have been affected. Gurdaspur was most affected, as 40,169 hectares of crop land were impacted due to heavy rain. Additionally, crop land in Mansa (24967), Sangrur (6560), Fazilika (17786) and Kapurthala (3000) were also affected. (ANI)
