‘Mera Kaka Zhou Enlai’ launched

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, May 2: The Nepali edition of the book ‘My Uncle Zhou Enlai’ has been launched. 

The book ‘Mera Kaka Zhou Enlai’  was released in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

The book, originally written by Zhou Erliu, was launched on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China.

 The book was jointly launched by Zhou Rong, granddaughter of former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, Wang Xin, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, Dr. Upendra Gautam, Secretary General of the China Study Center, translator Ajay Sharma, and editor and publisher Kiran Gautam.

During the event, Wang Xin praised Zhou’s selfless contributions and his historical role in establishing relations between Nepal and China. 

 Recalling Zhou Enlai’s visits to Nepal in 1957 and 1960, and the settlement of the Sagarmatha border issue, he said, “This book is not just a biography, it is a soulful bridge across the Himalayas.”

Zhou Rong expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome she received in Nepal. She also spoke about the deep emotional ties her family shares with Nepal.

Dr. Upendra Gautam of the China Study Centre highlighted  Zhou Enlai’s diplomatic contributions within the geopolitical context of the Himalayan region.

Editor and publisher Kiran Gautam said that the idea emerged two years ago on the death anniversary of Zhou Enlai. 

Gautam further added that in 1957, although foreigners were generally restricted from entering the Pashupatinath Temple, Premier Zhou Enlai was granted special permission. 

During that visit, Zhou donated 500 Indian Rupees to the temple, which Gautam’s father witnessed firsthand. He remarked that this event inspired Nepal to develop its distinct currency system.

Translator Ajay Sharma shared his emotional and intellectual journey during the translation process.

 He said that Zhou Enlai was not just a statesman but also a compassionate and thoughtful individual.

 “While translating the book, I had the chance to experience key moments in Chinese history. Zhou Enlai’s life deeply influenced me regarding leadership, integrity, and family values. 

This work was not merely about language translation; it was an opportunity to build a cultural bridge between two nations,” said Sharma.
