By Hari Krishna Sharma,Muktinath (Mustang), Mar. 14: Officials have acknowledged the crucial role of election police in ensuring a peaceful and fair parliamentary election in Mustang.
Speaking at a farewell programme for election police deployed for the House of Representatives election held on March 5, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chhiring Kippa Lama said the roles of the Nepal Police and election police were like two sides of the same coin.
DSP Lama said that election police worked tirelessly, even walking through deep snow to reach remote settlements and carry out security duties during the election.
According to the Integrated Procedure for Recruitment, Selection, Appointment and Mobilisation of Election Police, the personnel served for 40 days. At the farewell programme held on Thursday, the election police also shared their experiences and expressed their commitment to serve again in future elections whenever possible.
They said that the training and other capacity-building opportunities provided during the service would also help them secure jobs in security agencies as well as in the private sector.
Information Officer at the District Police Office Mustang, Santosh Basyal, said the personnel were given certificates at the ceremony and encouraged to participate in various campaigns of the government in the future.
Police deployed for the election received a salary of Rs. 34,776 for 40 days, a food allowance of Rs. 12,328 and Rs. 1,200 for transport and meal expenses.
In Mustang, 266 personnel were recruited under the Nepal Police and 46 under the Armed Police Force Nepal. They were deployed at 39 polling centres across the district’s five rural municipalities -- Thasang, Gharpajhong, Baragung Muktikshetra, Lo-Ghekar Damodarkunda and Lomanthang -- within the district’s single electoral constituency.
