Deukhuri (Dang), Nov 19: CPN (UML) leaders, including Vice Chair Yubaraj Gyawali, gathered in Dang today to mourn the demise of Devi Pokharel, a communist leader from Dang and a member of the party's Central Advisory Council.
During a condolence gathering at Pokharel’s private residence in Ghorahi on Tuesday, Gyawali praised the late Pokharel for his simplicity, integrity, dedication, and social service. He remembered Pokharel as a political person of strong moral character, who never resorted to trickery.
UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel, the younger brother of the late leader, expressed his deep admiration for his elder sibling for the contribution and sacrifices the senior Pokharel made for the family. He shared that it was his brother who inspired him to pursue education and play a role in community development. The UML General Secretary credited his brother for initiating a literacy campaign in the region, which helped to sow the seeds of knowledge and awareness in the community.
UML central member and Pokharel's sister Menaka Pokharel said her brother was not only a politician with integrity but also a social worker and a champion for education.
Devi Pokharel was born on November 22, 1950, at Hadime of the then Bijauri VDC-6 which is now part of Tulasipur Submetropolis-19. He began his political career as a member of the Nepal Communist Party (Pushpalal faction). He was the editor for the Sandesh magazine as well.
He was also a founding member of Deepshikha Higher Secondary School in Ghorahi. He passed away in the course of treatment for kidney failure on the night of November 8. (RSS)
