Libraries In Digital Era

blog

Britti Aryal

Public libraries are an essential part of any community, offering a welcoming and safe space for people from all backgrounds to explore, learn, and discover new ideas. They are the heart of any community, playing a significant role in expanding learning opportunities, building economic and social resilience, and preserving history. Despite the increasing digitisation of information, the importance of libraries has not diminished. They remain a vital resource for those who have no access to expensive educational resources or who cannot afford to purchase books or other learning materials offering an array of programmes and events including workshops, lectures, and book clubs.

However, it is unfortunate that we still do not have a good national-level public library that can serve as a model for others to follow. We must recognise the importance of libraries in today's digital age and work towards building more of them. They provide a truly public space where people can come together to learn, relax, and connect with others without any barriers. Public libraries have to tackle numerous challenges in addition to exploring opportunities that can cater to the diverse and ever-changing requirements of their users. People have different needs and preferences, making it challenging for libraries to provide ample resources and access to information that can fully satisfy their users. This is the primary reason why existing public libraries are facing a decline in usage.

Moreover, public libraries still lack proper digital access and skill support, such as computer usage and internet services, which further aggravate the frustrations of users. Therefore, libraries must employ digital resources, and new methodologies to enhance their value in the city. They lack of adequate space and funds. Libraries require silent spaces and proper funding to maintain their facilities, but the lack of funds is making it difficult for libraries to sustain their operations. A proactive mindset is necessary to ensure that existing public libraries can function smoothly and new public libraries can be established in the city. They play a vital role in preserving history and promoting truth, bringing people together, and strengthening the bonds of the community.

They leverage digital innovations to meet the changing needs of society. New public libraries in the city should be designed to be technologically driven so that all citizens have equitable access to them without any membership fees, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to learn and grow. The government should organise various programmes and events that showcase the libraries' importance. These events could include street rallies, book fairs, and educational workshops. Furthermore, inclusivity should be a priority, and public libraries should be designed to be friendly to all age groups, including those with disabilities. For this, they have the necessary facilities, such as wheelchair ramps and accessible washrooms.

Creating interactive learning environments is crucial to foster the participation of library users. Incorporating games, puzzles, and other engaging activities will encourage people of all ages to visit the library and make it a part of their daily routine. These activities will help promote a love of learning and inspire curiosity, leading to a more educated and informed society. A well-funded library system is essential to ensure that libraries can continue to provide a wealth of knowledge and information to the citizens. With proper funding, public libraries can expand access to information and enhance learning experiences, empowering individuals to participate more actively in the knowledge society.
