By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Mar. 27: Speaker Devraj Ghimire delivered a compelling address at the 148th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Geneva, Switzerland, marking a significant moment in the realm of international diplomacy on Monday.
In his speech, Speaker Ghimire underscored the pivotal role of parliamentary diplomacy in contemporary global affairs. He articulated how parliamentary diplomacy, once considered secondary to traditional state-centric diplomacy, has evolved into a crucial tool for fostering dialogue, cooperation, and understanding among nations.
“Among the alternative diplomacy tools, parliamentary diplomacy has developed as a very important tool,” said Speaker Ghimire.
During his address to the General Assembly, Ghimire emphasised the growing importance of parliamentary engagement in shaping international relations.
“Diplomacy has evolved from a mere government-centric approach to a more inclusive framework, incorporating the voices of parliamentary bodies. Parliamentary diplomacy adds a democratic dimension to international relations, representing the will and aspirations of the people,” said Speaker Ghimire.
Drawing from Nepal’s rich history of advocating for peace and coexistence, Speaker Ghimire reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to principles of non-alignment and peaceful coexistence. He urged parliamentarians worldwide to play a proactive role in preventing conflicts and promoting understanding between nations.
“Today, it is crucial to confront pressing global challenges, particularly the existential threat posed by climate change. Concerted international action is imperative. Despite Nepal’s status as a low-carbon emitter, our vulnerability to climate change is significant. I urge developed nations to honour their commitments in mitigating its adverse impacts,” said Speaker Ghimire.

“I extend heartfelt gratitude to the Swiss government and the IPU Secretariat for hosting the conference impeccably. Parliamentary diplomacy stands as a pivotal vehicle for fostering peace, stability, and prosperity on the global stage,” said Speaker Ghimire.
The 148th General Assembly of the IPU is set to address various issues with renewed optimism and commitment towards harnessing the power of parliamentary diplomacy to address the complex challenges facing humanity in the 21st century.
