In the fast-evolving age of digital platforms, online gaming has advanced from a normal hobby to a global phenomenon, captivating people from all around the world. While gaming offers a relaxing and entertaining experience, there are many challenges posed by the rising concern of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) that demand our consideration. As the virtual world gets more realistic, it is important to address the impact of excessive gaming and its effect on individuals and society.

The World Health Organisation has recognised IGD as a mental health condition that is characterised by impaired control over gaming. Increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences are challenges of today’s world. Not every individual who loves gaming is at risk of developing a disorder. However, those who develop the disorder can face severe consequences including affecting mental health, academic and occupational routine, and personal relationships.

The leading challenge associated with IGD is its potential to worsen the mental health of individuals. People get involved in excessive gaming as a diversion to use virtual worlds as a refuge from real-life stress. While gaming may offer temporary relief, it can inadvertently contribute to a cycle of isolation and exacerbate underlying mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression. Recognising the interconnected nature of mental health and gaming is crucial for devising effective intervention strategies.

The impact of IGD is not only on individuals but extends to societal levels. The rise in online gaming and its global competition, although providing lucrative opportunities for professional games, has also exaggerated its competitive nature. This hyper-competitive situation may increase a culture of excessive gaming, leading to individuals prioritising gaming achievements over personal well-being. Striking a balance between the pursuit of gaming excellence and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a challenge that requires the collaboration of industry stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and educators.

Educational institutions should also take up the responsibility of teaching the negative impacts of internet gaming. Educators must teach individuals that gaming should be taken as a legitimate form of entertainment and identify when it becomes a hindrance to academic performance. Therefore, there should also be educational programmes on responsible gaming habits and the potential consequences of excessive gaming, which can empower students to make informed choices about their online activities.

Guardians, too, play a crucial role in mitigating the risk associated with IGD. They should acknowledge their children’s gaming habits, establish open lines of communication, set reasonable time limits, and foster a healthy balance between screen time and other activities. Getting involved and gaming together with children at an early age can help guardians guide their children to responsible gaming habits.

In conclusion, the challenges posed by Internet Gaming Disorder in modern society require a complex approach. Mental health professionals, educators, guardians, and the gaming industry must collaborate to create an environment where gaming is enjoyed responsibly. By fostering awareness, providing resources for regulation, and encouraging social interactions, we can maintain the balance between the online and real worlds. Every individual who games actively online, professionally or generally, must ensure that gaming is an enriching aspect of our lives rather than a controlling aspect.
