BY TILACHAN PANDEY,Tamghas, Jan. 20: Kaligandaki Rural Municipality in Gulmi district has introduced a policy to deposit Rs. 10,000 in the account of each baby girl born in the rural municipality.

Chandra Bahadur Thapa, the head of the Health Department, informed that the rural municipality would establish a revolving fund of Rs. 10,000 for each baby girl born in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality.

"The policy aims to support girls in their higher studies as the fund would amount to approximately Rs. 40,000 by the time they become eligible to withdraw it.

As per the provision, only the account holder can withdraw the fund after obtaining the citizenship certificate."

Chief Administrative Officer Naresh Giri said since the working procedures have already been passed, implementing the policy would not face any legal problems.

Rural Municipality Chairperson Bed Bahadur Thapa said that the policy was introduced to end discrimination against girls and provide financial assistance to girls during their adolescent years.

According to the Health Department, approximately 40 girls were born in the rural municipality in the past fiscal year. The rural municipality had initially provided Rs. 5,000 to each of them. However, the department decided to establish the revolving fund as the provision of providing Rs. 5,000, failed to create a significant impact.

The department has received applications from 20 girls born in the current fiscal year.
