'Kantipur Cinemas' OTT Platform begins

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Oct. 18: Kantipur Film Academy officially introduced its new OTT platform ‘Kantipur Cinemas’ during an event held in Kathmandu on Monday. 

This platform allows viewers from around the world to access Kantipur Cinemas content via mobile phones, Android, iOS, Wave, and Smart TVs, it was informed in the programme. 

Initially, Kantipur Cinemas offers movies like ‘JACKIE - I am 21’ and  ‘Julebi’,  along with series such as ‘Brahmand’ and ‘Love Sutra’.  Additionally, there are several short films available on the app, including ‘Mother’,  ‘Kharani’,  ‘Ritu’  and ‘Miss Secret’.

The platform was inaugurtaed by former Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, who conveyed his best wishes for its success. Oli highlighted the challenges faced by actors in Nepal due to the country's smaller population compared to India and China. He expressed hope that Kantipur Cinemas would gain the support of Nepali audiences worldwide.

Prakash Puri, the CEO of Kantipur Film Academy, revealed that the viewers can access all contents on ‘Kantipur Cinemas’ for a monthly subscription fee of Rs. 299, which can be paid online. 

This makes ‘Kantipur Cinemas’ the first subscription-based OTT platform in Nepal, providing access to new Nepali films, short films, and series.

Bhuvan KC, Chairman of the Film Development Board, lauded 'Kantipur Cinemas' as a promising platform for both viewers and filmmakers. He emphasised that the potential of OTT platforms to connect global audiences with Nepali cinema, believing it could pave the way for the release of Nepali cinema on OTT platforms.

Comedian Deepak Raj Giri acknowledged the challenges of running an OTT platform in a smaller market and expressed confidence in its success, emphasising the importance of content and movie availability for the audience.
