By Our Correspondent,Rukum West, Apr. 11: Farmers in Rukum West are currently busy harvesting wheat. With the ripening of wheat crop planted in different areas of the district, the farmers have been engaged in the process of harvesting wheat.
Farmers in Machhimi, Sadhanchaur, Dopai, Solabang and other areas in Musikot Municipality are busy harvesting wheat, as are those in Kholagaun, Narji, Khahare, Jiunla, Lamichhanegaun, Gharigaun and Tata, among other areas of Chaurjahari Municipality.
Parashuram Jaisi, a farmer of Chaurjahari Municipality-1, said that the wheat stood ready for harvest and farmers were busy harvesting.
He said that some farmers had been harvesting wheat with machines. Gyan Bahadur Oli, a farmer of Musikot Municipality-13, said that the farmers were struggling to harvest wheat in the village.
He said that although wheat cultivation did not flourish due to lack of rain on time, good wheat grew in the irrigated areas.
Wheat harvesting is going on in various places of Aathbiskot Municipality, Sanibheri Rural Municipality, Banphikot Rural Municipality and Triveni Rural Municipality of the district.
Min Bahadur KC, acting chief of Agricultural Development Office Rukum West, informed that wheat had been cultivated on 9,690 hectares of land in the district. He estimated that there would be a 15 per cent fall in wheat production this year due to drought compared to last year.
According to the statistics of the Agriculture Development Office, around 11,241 tonnes of wheat was produced in the district last year.
According to the office, only 32 per cent of the wheat cultivated land is irrigated.
Out of the total area of 143,144 hectares in the district, only around 23,172 hectares is cultivable.
Out of which 16,841 hectares is cultivated and only 5,402 hectares of land has access to irrigation facilities.
The wheat is the most cultivated crop in the district in terms of area, followed by maize and rice.
The wheat is produced in large quantities as food in the district. In some places, it is also produced as advanced seeds.
