If we search websites, we can find many definitions of the word ‘good leader’.
A few of the most famous definitions are:
“The key concept to understand is that a good leader can interact with followers so that they want to listen to and want to be motivated, not that leaders motivate (control) them.”
In simple term, leadership nothing but a quality to influence other people to follow. Therefore, anyone who can influence people to follow them has leadership qualities.
These are just two of the concepts of a good leader that appeared on my top google search, but we can find millions of interpretations of it online. As a business student, I am well aware of the importance of a good leader, and with all of the happenings we have experienced within the past decade, our country is in dire need of a good leader.
Let's go five decades back. We could see our country was one among many developing Asian countries filled with good economies and prosperity. Today, if we look around us, those countries who were behind us in almost all aspects are now one of the leading countries of the world.
So, where did we go wrong? They all had their country with good leaders, not one but all. Those countries now fund projects in Nepal and not only that they provide us with aid while we are sinking into debt.
Here a question arises- ‘who is a good leader?’ I believe that a good leader is a good human being first along with ideas and a vision of a clear path to move towards their goal. A good leader has the guts to stand still in the huge waves of the ocean and give others a hand to sail over to the other side. Every human being has a leader inbuilt within themselves. All they have to do is realise it by themselves.
If we unfold the pages of history, we encounter some glorious impacts set on the entire world due to some incredible leaders. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Junior, Nelson Mandela, and also Winston Churchill are some popular names that we have come across.
Their incredible thoughts, motivation and influence among others have indeed made them able to imprint their presence into the minds and souls of many people. Out in the world, there are several other such people with inspiring stories that we might have not heard of. Even if we look at some ruling nations of the world, they are ruled by some incredible people, people with determination, selflessness, vision and passion to be good, do good and a constant desire to become better as each day goes by.
Not going too far, even our country has seen some incredible leaders who have made significant changes in our country’s development. Prithvi Narayan Shah, who not only united Nepal as one single beautiful nation but also promoted rapid progress of the entire nation, had a great vision and determination.
His leadership made it possible for us to identify ourselves as Nepalese and be proud. This proves that we alone can create a great impact even with the smallest move in our society. All we need is self-belief and determination.
Unfortunately, our country is not politically stable today. We notice development works in a few areas of the country but the pace of progress is sluggish. Our country today seeks a leader who is patriotic and thinks about our motherland's well being. We require a leader who understands and possesses the idea of how rapidly a nation can be developed and citizens can be happy and prosperous.
The clashes between the parties and the thirst for power among our leaders have blurred their vision of their major purpose which is their vision for ‘Prosperous Nepal’. Our motherland is blessed with natural beauty and covered with the colours of diverse cultures attracting the attention of many countries. Our land is already at the world's highest peak. Now we need to gear up in terms of uplifting our economy.
The major problem lies not only with having an unstable political atmosphere but also with the nature of people here. We have a habit of sitting back and blaming others. Despite that, if we just contribute as much as we can from our level, we can definitely see change. The habit of relying on others for most things has also set us back.
Due to the poor economy and absence of opportunities, we see that at least one member of every family today is
flying abroad.
Due to a lack of good quality and secure life, in search of better educational and vocational opportunities more than 2.5 million Nepalese, or nearly 10% of the population, work abroad (excluding India) in the year 2022 which is good for remittance but this proves that we have failed as a country.
Now is a high time to work for progress so that our future generation can live in peace and happiness. People from different countries would visit us to witness our quality of life and education. If they could do it we can do it too. All we need to do is start from this very moment.
Let’s not rely on others. We all are good leaders ourselves so let us contribute as much as we can from our respective places to build a safer and better Nepal.
