Duna, Tapari making competition organised

By Our Correspondent,Birtamod, Dec. 28: Araniko Secondary School of Mechinagar Municipality–7, Jhapa has organised a competition to teach its pupils the art of weaving traditional leaf plates. Srijana Dhungel, assistant principal of the school, said that a leaf plate weaving competition was organised as part of its extra-curricular activities.

She said that the novel contest had generated great buzz among the students and piqued their interest. A dozen students from four student houses participated in the competition.  Teacher Lokendra Thapaliya hoped that the competition would teach the young generation about the traditional utensil. He said that it would also make the students creative.

Known as Duna and Tapari in Nepali, these disposable multipurpose leaf plates and bowls are made by stitching leaves of specific plants together with small bamboo sticks.
