Thapa elected Ilam Municipality mayor

Pashupatinagar/Damak/Jumla/Tanahun, May 19: Kedar Thapa has been elected mayor and Bishnu Dahal deputy mayor in Ilam Municipality of Ilam. It is the first time that Nepali Congress (NC) candidates have won the local level election in Ilam municipality in 30 years.  

The CPN-UML had won the posts of both mayor and deputy mayor in the local level elections of 1997 and 2017. 

NC candidate Thapa garnered 13,165 votes while his closest rival, Dhiren Chemchong of the CPN-UML, got 10,587. Likewise, Dahal of NC has been elected deputy mayor with 13,542 votes. Her closest rival Sita Devi Rijal of CPN-UML got 10,587 votes.  

Similarly, NC has won the post of chairman in Sandakpur Rural Municipality and Chulachuli Rural Municipality in Ilam. NC candidate Tula Gurung and Rajendra Kerung were elected chairmen of Sandakpur and Chulachuli Rural Municipality respectively. Earlier, CPN-UML  had won in both the municipalities in 2017 election. 

Mani Kumar Syangbo of NC has been elected chairman in Rong Rural Municipality. 

Similarly CPN-UML's candidate Surya Pokhrel  has been elected mayor in Deumai Municipality. Pokhrel secured 8,695 votes while Hom Dulal of NC got 8,563 votes. Pabimaya Rai with 8,563 votes was elected deputy mayor. 

Likewise, Khamba Singh Limbu of UML has been elected chairman  in Mai Municipality,  Hemanta Rai was elected in Mangsebung Rural Municipality and Kush Bahadur Thewe in Maijogmai Rural Municipality. 

Meanwhile, Rabindra Lingden of Rastriya Prajatantra Party has been reelected as chairman in Haldibari Rural nMunicipality of Jhapa.

According to Haldibari Election Office, Lingden won with 6,856 votes while his closest rival Dambar Bahadur Giri of the CPN-UML got 4,666 votes. The post of deputy-mayor was also won by Rastriya Prajatantra Party candidate Laxmi Devi Mainali securing 5,078 votes. 

Her competitor Shanta Devi Gautam of CPN-UML garnered 4,106 votes. 

Likewise, independent candidate Raju Singh Kathayat has won in Chandannath Municipaliy, the only municipality of Jumla. Singh won the mayorship with 2,403 votes leaving behind Padam Bahadur Shahi of NC (2,341 votes). 

NC's Ram Devi Khadka has been elected deputy mayor by securing 2,808 votes. Her competitor Bhim Bahadur Thapa of CPN (Unified Socialist) got 1,686 votes.

According to our Tanahun correspondent, NC rebel candidates won the post of ward chairman in four wards of Tanahun. 

The rebel candidates had filed their nominations after they were denied party tickets.  Independent candidates Bharat Krishna Shrestha in Rishing Rural Municipality-8 and Durga Bahadur Thapa in Ward No. 7 have been elected ward chairmen.

 Likewise, in Bhanu Municipaliy, Bimal Raj Joshi has been elected ward chairman of Ward No. 11 and Krishna Bahadur Adhikari in Ward No. 13.

Similarly, Janata Samajwadi Party's Bechan Prasad Mehta has been elected chairman of Dewanganj Rural Municipality in Sunsari. 

The deputy-chairman post was won by Kumari Bibha Yadav of NC. Mehta garnered 6,874 votes and Yadav 6,112 votes. 

Likewise, NC candidate Ajmal Akhtar has been elected chairman of Bhokraha Narshingh Rural Municipality. Akhtar secured 4,606 votes. His closest rival CPN-UML's Mahendra Prasad Yadav got 3,271 votes. 

Likewise, NC's Sunita Urab won the post of deputy chair garnering 3,974 votes.
