Kathmandu, Jan 27: A memorial assembly was organised today at Sifal height of Kathmandu, where martyr Dharma Bhakta Mathema had got martyrdom.
Martyr Week organising Committee organised the memorial assembly in the day and place where Mathema had got martyrdom for democracy.
Offering a wreath at the statue of martyr Mathema, Coordinator of the Committee and acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol, said the assembly was organised to recall the struggle and sacrifice of martyrs so that the new generation should not experience the cruelty, injustice that the citizens during previous regime suffered.
She talked about Mathema's role to achieve democracy and contribution in social transformation, stating, "Mathema had political awareness. He was physical fitness promoter. His courage of struggling against autocratic rule despite being a physical fitness instructor for the then King should be a lesson for youths. He sacrificed his life for the freedom of citizens and now we are in this place due to his sacrifice."
The then Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher Rana had on Magh 6, 1997 BS announced death penalty for Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand.
Shastri was hanged to death at Teku Machali on the fourth day after the announcement of capital punishment to them, Mathema at Sifal height on the seventh day while Chand and Shrestha were shot to death at Shovabhagawati, the Bishnumati river bank on the ninth day. (RSS)
