Organic homestay opens on way to Rara in Sinja

blog

By Netra Shahi,Jumla, Dec. 9: A new homestay has come into operation in Kanakasundari, in the Sinja region of Jumla.  Established to provide tourists with a peaceful and safe place to stay and eat, the homestay has been launched on the recommendation of the local government, with joint investment from the non-government organisation INF and local hoteliers. Located in a clean and scenic spot in Guthijyula -- with a small stream in front, an apple orchard behind and lush forest above -- the Apple Garden Homestay has already begun attracting visitors.

The homestay, built on the banks of the Mahendramalli stream, was constructed with a total investment of Rs. 720,000. Of this, Rs. 300,000 was contributed by local Nirmal Budha and his wife, Nirmaya Budha, and Rs. 420,000 was provided through INF Jumla’s Srijana project.

Built using local wood and stone, the homestay features three rooms with attached toilets on the upper floor and a hall and kitchen on the ground floor.

Operator Nirmaya Budha said the homestay gives priority to serving organic local food, including Jumla’s famous Marsi rice, buckwheat bread, finger-millet dhindo and maize dhindo, along with other local produce.

A place to experience Khas culture

Visitors can also enjoy performances reflecting the region’s Khas culture. The Karnali Khas Cultural Conservation Forum presents Deuda songs and cultural plays in the hall on the ground floor for guests who wish to watch. The group has long been promoting Khas language and traditions through such performances, Budha added.

Dipendra Bhandari, Chief Administrative Officer of Kanakasundari Rural Municipality, thanked INF for supporting the operation of the Apple Garden Homestay. INF has also assisted six hotels on the Rara trekking route with equipment to upgrade their services. According to programme coordinator Indra Bishwakarma, each of the six hotels received support worth Rs. 120,000 per person.

A week-long homestay management training has also been conducted, and owner Nirmal Budha was taken on an exposure visit to homestays in Gavar, Banke.

The Apple Garden Homestay, situated at the top of Guthijyula, also offers a campfire facility at night. From here, tourists can begin a walking trail leading towards Rara Lake.
