Kathmandu, Oct 31: The Women Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) has reported an alarming rate of violence against women.
In a press statement today, the organization stated that in the past three months (April–June 2025), a total of 308 cases of violence against women were documented in the country.
According to WOREC Programme Manager Sulochana Khanal, 41 incidents were reported through newspapers and media outlets, while 267 were recorded from primary sources by WOREC. Of the total incidents of gender-based violence, 21 were related to murder and three to attempted murder.
Regarding the age of the victims in murder cases, the most affected group is 18–25 years, accounting for six victims or 29 percent, followed by the 26–35 age group at 24 percent, and those under 18 years at 19 percent.
In terms of perpetrators, the majority are within from the family: either husband or family members. Forty-three percent of victims (nine) were killed by their husbands, and 24 percent (five) by other family members. Similarly, 10 percent of the victims were murdered by neighbors, 5 percent by intimate friends, and 14 percent by ex-husbands.
Concerning marital status, a majority of murder victims, or 82 percent (17), were married, 10 percent (two) were unmarried, and the status of nine victims could not be established.
According to Nepal Police statistics for 2081–82 BS, four women were killed following rape, two were murdered over dowry disputes, and 38 women were killed due to domestic violence. (RSS)
