Dodhara Chandani (Kanchanpur), Oct 12: A modern integrated waste management centre has been formally brought into operation at Shuklaphanta Municipality here.
Waste generated in the city and rural areas is collected and brought to the centre. Sanitation workers at the centre separate and store biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and reusable waste. After classifying the collected waste at the centre, compost is produced from biodegradable waste, while reusable waste is sold to recyclers.
The waste management centre, built with an investment of Rs 302.5 million, spreads over an area of 3.9 hectares of land.
The centre, which has a capacity of processing about six metric tons, currently collects only two to three metric tons of waste daily, informed Jayant Bhatta, an engineer at the Integrated Waste Management Centre.
“This is not only a waste management centre but also a processing facility where various types of waste from the market are sorted,” Bhatta said. “Small amounts of waste are placed in cells and covered with soil, which does not affect the environment.” In the morning, waste collection vehicles make rounds in the urban and rural areas of the city to collect and bring waste here, he added.
Engineer Bhatta stated that at the centre, biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and reusable waste will be separated and stored, and compost will be prepared from biodegradable waste to be sold. This not only helps keep the environment clean and ensures proper waste management but also creates employment opportunities to the locals.
Uddhav Singh Saud, site in-charge of the construction company Raman KS JV, informed that the waste management centre has been operational since last Bhadra (August-September) after the construction work was completed.(RSS)
